Hallmarq Veterinary Imaging Ltd supplies MRI systems to leading equine veterinary clinics worldwide. The Hallmarq EQ2 Standing Equine MRI is the world's only MRI scanner designed to image the standing horse.
In 2015 the company won both the Queen's Award for Enterprise and the Institute of Physics award for the innovations that allow the horse to be scanned under light sedation without general anaesthesia, meaning that scans can be carried out without risk, close to competition, and with minimal interruption to training schedules.
The availability of MRI over the last decade has revolutionised lameness diagnosis, especially in the case of poor performance in the racehorse. A slight lameness or poor performance can be a sign of palmar osteochondral disease or increased fracture risk, both of which be assessed using MRI. An accurate MRI diagnosis, obtained early in the course of the disease gives equine veterinarians the information they need to recommend appropriate treatment and management of the case.
