Discussion

The real world is never straightforward, particularly where reproductive biology interacts with the law and government policy. This paper discusses topical equine reproduction-related regulatory issues that are not found in text books, and that are a frequent source of frustration to all parties.
Particular issues of current concern will be discussed, such as: (i) EVA vaccination and pre-breeding testing, (ii) CEM and EVA control, (iii) the movement of semen into the UK, particularly that coming from other EU Member States, and (iv) the much misunderstood role of the law and health certification, together with the responsibilities of clients, private vets and government. It is intended that this presentation will provide a complete and current update on these issues and an insight into the alien world of government policy, while providing the opportunity for frank questioning and discussion of relevant issues.
