Abstract

Advances in genomics and bioinformatics have allowed the generation of single cell transcriptomic data. This provides a means of understanding cell heterogeneity at an unprecedented level of granularity. This technology can be applied to the analysis of human tissues and organs, to identify molecular targets at a single cell level. Some examples will be provided of its use to reveal novel cell subsets and functionality in tissue-resident immune cells in the kidney, of relevance to a wide range of kidney diseases.
