Abstract

The societal burden of brain diseases is increasing. A common goal for drug-discovery and the neurosciences is to harness and develop new technologies to achieve breakthroughs in understanding and patient diagnosis and therapeutics. However, developing novel treatments and reducing the cost and risk of drug development crucially depends on (1) harnessing and developing new technology, (2) advancing pharmacological interventions, including those that can interact with non-pharmacological interventions such as brain stimulation, and (3) improving fundamental understanding of neural systems and circuits, including how to translate findings from rodent and non-human primate models to humans. This presentation will provide an update on novel and emerging technologies within the neurosciences and highlight collaborative opportunities around these domains between academic and industry science. The topics will include: neuropharmacology from neurons to whole-brain imaging, development of novel models, technology translation to human patients, drug discovery for psychiatric disorders and dementia, and training and equipping the next generation of life scientists.
