Profile of Sue Dyson

Head of Clinical Orthopaedics in the Centre for Equine Studies of the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, England, running a clinical referral service for lameness and poor performance, attracting clients from all over the United Kingdom, Ireland and continental Europe. After qualifying, Sue was awarded a Thouron Scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania and completed an Internship in Large Animal Medicine and Surgery at New Bolton Centre. She then spent a year in private equine practice in Pennsylvania. She was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) for a thesis entitled ‘The Differential Diagnosis of Shoulder Lameness in the Horse’ and the RCVS Diploma in Equine Orthopaedics by examination. She was awarded a PhD by the University of Helsinki. Sue is currently sought after to lecture internationally and she has published widely on equine orthopaedics and diagnostic imaging. She has published more than 200 refereed papers in scientific journals, relating to lameness and diagnostic imaging in the horse. She is co-author of standard veterinary texts on lameness, radiology, scintigraphy and MRI, and is recognised as a world-class leader in her field. In 1986 Sue was awarded the Richard Hartley Clinical Prize by the Equine Veterinary Journal. In 2000 Sue was awarded the British Equine Veterinary Association John Hickman Orthopaedic Award for outstanding contributions to equine orthopaedics. In 2005 she was made an Honorary Member of the British Equine Veterinary Association. She also received, together with Mike Ross, the American Publishers award for excellence in professional and scholarly publishing for the first edition of ‘Diagnosis and Management of Lameness in the Horse’ in the Nursing and Allied Health Division. In 2006 Sue was a co-recipient of the Home of Rest Clinical Evidence Literary Prize awarded by the Equine Veterinary Journal. In 2007 Sue was awarded the Tierklinik Hochmoor award for outstanding, innovative and lasting contributions to equine veterinary medicine worldwide. In 2010 Sue was made an Associate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. In 2012 Sue received the International Veterinary Radiology Association J Kevin Kealy Award for scientific contributions to veterinary radiology.
