Profile of Dr Nick Matheson

Dr Nicholas Matheson is a Principal Investigator in the Department of Medicine at the University of Cambridge, an Honorary Consultant in Infectious Diseases at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and an Honorary Consultant in Virology at NHS Blood and Transplant.

He qualified in medicine from the University of Oxford in 2003, undertook specialist training in General Medicine and Infectious Diseases in London and Cambridge, and spent two years as a Visiting Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, his clinical work and research were focussed on blood borne viral infections, such as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). More recently, he has reoriented his laboratory in the Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Disease (CITIID) towards understanding and combating SARS-CoV-2.

He designed and leads the internationally-recognised University of Cambridge Asymptomatic COVID-19 Screening Programme, and helped kick-start a wider mass testing initiative for the UK higher education sector.
