Travel to Aberystwyth

Your travel to Aberystwyth is likely to include a combination of air, rail, ferries and road journeys.

Aberystwyth Town Centre is located approximately 1 mile from the Arts Centre on the University's Penglais campus. This distance can be walked in 15-20 minutes, although local buses and taxis and available.

The BSP Spring Conference is being held on Aberystwyth University Penglais Campus (Post code SY23 3BY).

By Car

Aberystwyth is easily accessible by road. Whichever way you're approaching from you will experience beautiful scenery. From the east the A44 climbs through the Cambrian Hills and down to the coast, and from the north or south the A487 offers spectacular views over Cardigan Bay.

One possible route into Aberysytwtyh is through the Tal y Llyn pass. This pass doesn’t just offer breath taking views of the country side; it also plays host as a RAF training spot and you are likely to see Red Kites and Buzzards.

When you approach Aberystwyth by road you will see signs directing you to Aberystwyth University; these will lead you to Penglais Campus.
Look out for the bright yellow square signs containing a picture of a mortarboard.

Parking at Penglais Campus is available to delegates. We will send you a parking permit which you will need to print out and display on your dashboard.

Please be aware that parking in Aberystwyth Town Centre is very limitted. If booking a hotel, please tell them if you also require parking.

By Train
There is a regular train service from London, Euston, with a journey time of 5 hours.
The main inter-city services offer connections to Aberystwyth from Birmingham International, Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton (journey time is approximately 3 hours).
The other main connection point to Aberystwyth is from Shrewsbury (journey time is approximately 2 hours).

Aberystwyth Railway Station is situated in the town centre, adjacent to the Bus Station and Taxi Rank. Taxis from the station cost to Penglais campus about £3.00 and all the taxi drivers know the university halls of residence.

Eurostar trains from Paris, Brussels & Lille arrive at London St. Pancras International. It takes approximately fifteen minute to walk to London Euston station, from which you can catch trains to Aberystwyth via Birmingham New Street. Check the above section on Trains for more information.


By Air
The nearest airports are Birmingham International and Manchester. If you arrive at Birmingham International, there is a direct train connection to Aberystwyth which takes 3 hours.

From Manchester airport, you can take a train to Crewe and change there for Shrewsbury. There are direct connections from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth (2 hours - total journey about 4 hours).

You can also travel to London, Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Liverpool, Cardiff and other airports. These are linked by public transport routes to Aberystwyth. Please check train routes and times when arranging travel.

By Ferry
Fishguard is the arrival port for ferries from Rosslare, Ireland.
By car the journey from Abergaun to Aberystwyth takes approximately one hour and forty five minutes.

Holyhead is the arrival port for ferries from Dublin & Dun Laoghaire in Ireland.
By car the journey from Holyhead to Aberystwyth takes approximately two hours and thirty minutes.
Alternatively, take the train or bus to Bangor and then the Traws Cymru T2 bus service to Aberystwyth. See more details on Traveline Cymru (https://www.traveline.cymru/).

Dover is the arrival port for ferries arriving from Calais and Dunkirk in France.
By car the journey from Dover to Aberystwyth takes approximately six and a half hours.
Alternatively, take a taxi or walk to Dover Priory Station, from where you can catch the High speed 1 (HS1) train service to London St. Pancras. It takes approximately fifteen minutes to walk to London Euston to catch a train to Aberystwyth via Birmingham. See the above section on train travel for more details.



Additional Information for those travelling from overseas
1. Immigration requirements
Please check with your local British Consulate, Embassy or High Commission if you require a visa for entry to the UK. A current passport or identity card, valid for the duration of your time in the United Kingdom, is essential. Participants requiring a formal letter of invitation should e mail the conference organiser Justin Pachebat (bsp2018@aber.ac.uk.

2. Insurance
You are advised to take out personal travel and health insurance for your visit.

3. Climate and Clothing
The British climate is well known for its variability and some days can be cold and/or wet, especially in spring. The average temperature in April is 13 degrees Celsius. You should bear this in mind when selecting clothing for your visit to Britain.
